Au Revoir Les Enfants
Two boys in a Carmelite school struggle with the German occupation and the demands of friendship. French with subtitles.
A 1987 film by the French filmmaker Louis Malle, this film is based on real life events. At age 11, during World War II, attending a French boarding school Malle witnessed a Gestapo raid. Three Jewish students were arrested, sent to Auschwitz and gassed. The school headmaster was sent to a concentration camp and died shortly after liberation, later to be granted the title of Righteous Among Nations by the Israelis.
In viewing this film, we should ask ourselves, what would I do? What is the right thing to do and how closely would I approximate that virtue?
